The rise of the freelance worker
A recent study estimates that by next year, more than 40 per cent of the American workforce – about 60 million people – will be independent workers, such as freelancers, contractors, and temporary employees.
The reasons for this are many and varied.
For example, there are now many more ways to work remotely than ever before – including mobile devices, online apps, and other personal technology that allows us to communicate with each other from virtually anywhere.
There are also many new platforms designed to match independent talent with businesses: such as Freelancer.com, Elance, Ozlance and a host of others.
And the rise of co-working spaces in urban centres is offering freelancers unprecedented support and resources.
Here in Perth for example, there has been an explosion in co-working spaces available around the City, including Spacecubed, Hive Co-working, TechHub, Atomic Sky, Flowspace and Sync Labs.
The new workplace diversity – combined with technological advances – has greatly increased the need for employers to provide a more collaborative and flexible working environment in their existing workplaces.
And along with the rise in remote working and working from home, more and more organisations are now realising the benefits.
