Magic mushrooms prove a panacea for Canadian mother in new movie

In 2018 Canadian mother Laurie Brooks was diagnosed with late-stage terminal cancer and given only six to 12 months to live.

After some only partially successful chemotherapy, Laurie hears about the alleged benefits of medicinal magic mushrooms and jumps in ‘feet first’ to try the new panacea.

On the surface, the 53-year-old suburban wife and mother of four is not your regular magic mushroom user.

However, the benefits she received from using the drug were so great she became a firm advocate of its use in helping other cancer sufferers.

Dosed 2: The Trip of a Lifetime is a follow-up to the well-received 2019 documentary Dosed, also made by Tyler Chandler and Nicholas Meyers.

In order to use the active ingredient of magic mushrooms (known as ‘psilocybin’), legally, Brooks benefited from the introduction of new Canadian legislation allowing limited use of psychedelics for medical reasons under Section 56.

According to recent news articles, a growing number of cities in the US are also opting to decriminalize the possession and use of many psychedelics, including psilocybin, ayahuasca, and MDMA.

Filmed with great kindness and compassion, Dosed 2 documents the tragic true story of Laurie’s struggle to beat cancer with the help of her wonderful family.

At no time though does the audience feel dispirited, as Laurie’s tremendous courage and perseverance throughout her battle for survival shines through.

A transformational and mind-opening film, Dosed 2 certainly throws mud in the eye of all those who think magic mushrooms are just for hippies and dreamers from the 1960s.

The film also includes appearances by specialists in the field of psychedelics, including physician and author Gabor Maté, mycologist Paul Stamets, and researcher and author Dennis McKenna.

Laurie’s change from initial sceptic to mushroom convert is inspirational and at no time does the film become bogged down in mediocrity as it explores the boundaries of psychedelic medicine and the benefits it can bring.

Dosed 2: The Trip of a Lifetime is showing at Luna Leederville on November 29, 2022.
